MUCUNA PURITA HOOK.

Mucuna purita or cowhage is a slender hairy climber. The branches are long with alternate regular leaves. The white flowers are normally in clusters with butterfly-shaped corolla. The pods are covered with stinging hairs. When young, the pods are eaten as vegetable in some countries.

Medicinal Use of Cowhage:

• Promotes the flow of urine and gives tone and vitality to the body.
• Helps the nervous system and takes care of facial paralysis, hemiplegia or paralysis on one side of the body and hallucinations accompanied with high fevers.
• Threadworm.
• As a nervine or an agent which has a soothing or calming effect on the nerves.
• Disorders of the reproductive system such as leucorrhoea, spermatorrhoea and menstrual problems.

How to use:

• The decoction of the root will promote the flow of urine, give tone and vitality to the body, help the nervous system and take care of facial paralysis, hemiplegia and hallucinations accompanied with high fevers.
• The hairs on the pods are given to treat threadworm.
• The seeds, given in powder form or in decoction will soothe the nerves. It will alleviate disorders of the reproductive system such as leucorrhoea, spermatorrhoea and menstrual problems.

Parts used:
The roots, pods and seeds.

Dose:
When the roots and pods are used, follow the normal dose. When the seeds are used, 1 to 2 grams are to be used with 1 litre of water and 3 to 4 cups are to be taken a day.
